Another must-do in this beautiful vacation spot is shopping. There are loads of souvenir shops in White Beach alone. However, if you want something different, head off to Make Waves, one of the most interesting souvenir shops in town.
Located at the Muelle port, Make Waves is not exactly just a souvenir shop. You can look at it as some sort of personal museum. Started in 1980 by Jing Masilungan, the shop started out as a shorts and shirt store, the very first one in Puerto Galera, in fact.
Being a musician, producer and artist, Kuya Jing made his shop reflect his own personality and interests, and the trinkets have added up over the years.
Bob Marley memorabilias, old posters, weird and interesting trinkets here and there, the shop is eye candy for anyone interested in all things weird and one-of-a-kind.
The store does carry the more traditional Puerto Galera shirts and accessories, but Kuya Jing also sells other items like kubings (a traditional musical instrument), driftwood artcrafts, camping equipment, among other random stuff that give the store its unique personality.
If you don’t fancy shopping, a visit to the shop just to talk to Kuya Jing and to hear his stories about Puerto Galera is also an activity in itself. Every odd trinket there also has a story to be told.
When I asked Kuya Jing what else he can offer guests visiting him, he said that if the guests requests for something, as long as he is okay with it, he can find a way to offer it to the guest. Case in point, while I was at the shop, a guest was also finalizing something with Kuya Jing with regards to them being guided for the Malasimbo festival.
So if you find yourself in Puerto Galera and want to do something more than just go swimming, diving, or snorkeling, check out the Make Waves shop.
