Ta Prohm is one of the temples in the Angkor Archaeological Complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It’s one of the most popular temples in the area, mostly because of its strange beauty, but also because it was featured in the highly popular Hollywood film Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie.
I was admiring the magnificence of the giant strangler figs taking over the ruins of the Ta Prohm when I spotted this child. She stared unseeingly in front of her, unaware and indifferent to the hordes of tourists gawking at the scenery around her. Deep in thought, she didn’t even notice me taking her picture.
What could she have been thinking? Is she thinking perhaps, of how eerie the trees looked, seemingly eating up the ruins of a structure already centuries old? Or maybe she was thinking how, we, the visitors, were destroying the serenity of the place?
How about you? Any guesses as to what this child could have been thinking that day?

@ Raymond / AJ: Yeah, lots of kids there. And some of them can speak English. They were also made to memorize the capital cities of every country so when they ask a tourist where they’re from, they’d immediately say what the capital is. So funny.
This photo reminds me of the Ta Prohm scene in Lara Croft. Angelina Jolie also found a mysterious child there. I also saw a lot of local children during my visit, which was strange cuz there were none in Angkor and Bayon.
I was at Ta Prohm a few days ago and absolutely loved it. Lots of kids like this outside hawking everything you don’t need.
Nice shot!
@ Ace: You are so funny! LOL
@ Satu: Of all the temples in the Angkor complex, I love Ta Prohm best. Everything is just so impressive there!
I kept staring at the photo, thinking “where’s the kid?” It’s like she’s almosta part of the scenery and just belongs there, sitting in her thoughts… I love this photo, it makes me want to be there too.
The child was thinking:
“Here’s another backpacker taking my photo, using it on her blog, then earning money using my photograph”
haha. just kidding. :p
@ Ed: I remember your wonderful series on Siem Reap. It’s still a backlog for me, but with this post, I’m getting there haha
the kid was thinking about her next marketing strategy on how to sell her merchandise to the incoming tourists! haha. nice photo. 😀
@ Claire: I’m sure you’ll enjoy Angkor. *envious*
@ Jerome: I was there only for a day. Wish I could have made it longer too!
