What do you do when you find something you like online?
Before, I used to copy the text and the URL of the post, paste it onto a Word document, and save it in my computer. If it’s an image, I would save the image and where I got it from.
My intention was simple: I wanted to save them so that I could go back to them someday when I had more time to leisurely look at all the interesting things I found online.
Unfortunately, that someday never came, and everything I’d saved is now gone, buried in all the files I have. If you have the same problem, use the perfect solution I found: Pinterest.
I know, I know. Who needs another social bookmarking site, right?
However, Pinterest is a pretty handy tool to have. You can bookmark all the good things you find online in one place that you can always go back to again and again.
Pinterest is highly visual and it organizes your interest (via images) into boards (like bulletin boards IRL) that you can easily categorize. You can have an unlimited number of boards and you can pin (or bookmark) as many images or videos as you like onto each board.
So when you’re online and see something you like–from photos of food, places, or people–just “pin” it (like you would on a real life bulletin board) and you can always go back to it later.
I’ve been using Pinterest for years now, but not so actively. Mostly I pin travel-related images (Places I’ve Been, Bucket List), cats, food and drinks, people, and things I love, among others.
Now that I was asked by Pinterest to be part of their community of content creators in the Philippines, I want to promote my Best of the Philippines board (of course). Some pins come from my blog, but most are pinned from other travelers, both foreign and local. A lot of Philippine destinations are picture perfect, making them a great fit for Pinterest!
However, Pinterest is not just for travel. It can be especially useful for those who love cooking or making crafts. There are a lot of excellent DIY and recipes boards that you can find there. Those who like art will also find Pinterest the perfect site to save images of striking artwork. I usually pin photos of paintings, street art, and other creative works.
Here are some things you need to know about Pinterest (if you don’t know them already):
- Joining requires an invitation. I don’t know why, but if you want to try it out, register using my invitation. It will be available for a limited time only.
- Each image that you bookmark (or pin) links directly to its source website, so if you want more information about it, just click on the image and it will take you there.
- Have the “Pin It” button installed in your toolbar. With this button, you can pin anything you find online (you need an image on the page though). To install the button, check out this Pinterest tutorial.
- Make sure to create “Boards” so that you can categorize your pins depending on the subject. You can create anything you like from a generic topic like “Travel” or “Recipes” to a more specific one, like “Manila” or “Salads.” It will help you find them easily later on.
- You can add friends in your Pinterest account by following their boards. Once you’ve followed them, you can see what they pin, and if you like them, you can easily Repin them into your own boards.
So if you still don’t have a Pinterest account, join now (use my invite in #1 above)! Click on the photo below for my profile and follow me. See you there!

In the beginning, I ignored Pinterest but now I am pinning images and joining boards. Its certainly a good way to gather some traction for your site. Just followed you there,
I use “Pocket” for the purpose of bookmarking sites, I always thought that pinterest was more about “pinning” images then pinning content?
Nevertheless, im sure Pinterest is a great platform, maybe ill try it for bookmarking purposes one day.
Hi Paul! As long as that content has an image, you can definitely pin it. That’s why a lot of DIY and food pins get a lot of traffic; people click the image to go to the content. I don’t use Pocket, but I would highly recommend Pinterest. Very visually appealing.
