When you say Australia, the last thing that would ever come into mind would be “Winter Wonderland.”
That’s mostly because most people have a Northern Hemisphere mindset of the whole Winter = Christmastime. While Aussie Christmas is hot and sunny, it’s actually during mid-year when temperatures start to drop.
There may be some slight dusting in the CBD (although it’s very rare) and a bit of snowflakes in the suburbs, but fluffy snowfall and winter sports are usually for the Aussie Alps nearby.
Either way, it gets cool enough to put on a stylish coat and there’s heaps to do in Oz, especially in Melbourne, at wintertime. So if you’re looking for a fun mid-year trip, here are a few of our favorite winter activities in Melbourne.
Ice Skating in Federation Square
Head to the River Rink at Fed Square, and you get to rug up and take a spin on pristine white ice back-dropped by the picture-perfect Yarra River and the twinkling Melbourne city skyline.
Whether you’re a pro figure skater testing out a few moves, a beginner excited at the prospect of ice in the typically warm Australia, or a group of mates giggling at each other failing and falling, it’s going to be loads of fun for the whole gang.
Don’t worry if it’s your first time as the River Rink is equipped with 70cm high skating aids to help keep you upright. Get in quick, though, because the aids are at a first come first served basis.
When your legs start to feel like jelly and you need a breather, because skating is more cardio than you would think it would be, recharge and warm up to some awesome winter food available in stalls nearby.
There’s going to be a nice selection of food and beverage for you and even the little ones to choose from. So bundle up and head to the River Rink for some fun on ice!
If you’re bringing a rent-a-car, Fed Square has a multi-level car park for affordable rates. Check out their website for more information on parking and their other events!
Junior (3 – 5 years): $15.00
Child (6 – 14 years): $18.50
